First published by Squaresoft in 2002, Kingdom Hearts has always been a unique series. Squaresoft paired up with Disney in order to make an interesting crossover of Disney classics and Final Fantasy, with all new characters. Kingdom Hearts III, the newest version, will be released on December 31, 2015.
You take control of Sora, a boy who was forced to combat the enemies called the Heartless when they attacked his home island. In the first game, early in your adventure, you meet your two companions for the rest of the game: Donald Duck, and Goofy.
These two familiar faces will accompany you and fight by your side as you take down evil. You travel from world to world, which are almost all based on Disney locations. In the first game alone, you encounter a huge range of Disney worlds: Wonderland, the Olympus Coliseum from Hercules, the jungle from Tarzan, Agrabah, Monstro (the whale from Pinocchio), Atlantis from the Little Mermaid, Halloween Town, Neverland, and even the 100 Acre Woods.
You will also encounter the famous Disney Villains such as Hades, Scar, Oogie Boogie, Jafar, Ursula, Hook, and others. The main enemy in the series are the Heartless. They come in various forms – ranging from giants to little monsters that you slash through like butter.
Every different world will also have world-specific heartless, and a boss Heartless. The combat is reminiscent of what would be a real-time Final Fantasy. You have a menu in the bottom left of your screen where you can switch between “Attack,” “Magic,” “Item,” and an open slot that can be used to interact with various objects.
You can use your strange “keyblade” to slash through enemies, and even use various magic attacks like fire, blizzard, thunder, and others. Basic items that you can use to your advantage include potions to replenish health, elixirs to replenish magic, and various pieces of equipment that add buffs – such as fire resistance, extra defense, or increased health.
When you travel to each world, you’ll likely be attempting to resolve the main conflict in that specific Disney film. For example, in Wonderland, you run around finding evidence to prove to the Queen of Hearts that Alice isn’t guilty.
This works the same way in Kingdom Hearts II, so we can expect to see it in Kingdom Hearts III as well. There is much speculation around the games right now as to what new worlds will be included in Kingdom Hearts III.
It’s a safe assumption that given its massive popularity, we’ll see some Frozen material. Some people have even speculated that we will be seeing some material from Star Wars, given Disney’s recent acquisition.
